SHA Adding Count-Down Signals and New LED Traffic Signals

(October 5, 2016) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is improving safety at the MD 77 (East Main Street) / MD 550 (Church Street/Water Street) intersection in Thurmont, Frederick County.  The $168,000 project will begin mid-October and be complete late fall, weather permitting.

SHA will place new signal poles and LED traffic signals at the intersection. LED lights increase visibility for motorists and are more energy efficient.  SHA will also install new countdown (displays seconds remaining to cross) and audible pedestrian signals at the intersection, as well as upgrade sidewalk ramps to comply with federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.  Crews will paint the crosswalks to increase visibility and add an extra layer of safety for pedestrians at the intersection.

SHA’s contractor, Scott A. Duncan of Harmans, may block an occasional single lane during the installation of the new signal poles. A flagging operation will safely guide motorists through the intersection.  Work will take place Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.  Approximately 2,800 vehicles us this portion of MD 77 daily.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.

A updated listing of current roadway projects is included in e-Road Ready 2016.  Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
