Nighttime Paving Requires Inner, Outer Loop I-495 Triple Lane Closures Next Week

(October 27, 2016) – Beginning Sunday night, October 30 at 9 p.m., the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will close lanes on the southbound I-95/I-495 (inner loop of the Capital Beltway) Bridge over the Amtrak Railroad (near MD 450/Annapolis Road) to pave the bridge deck and roadway.  The planned work and lane closures are weather permitting.

SHA will close one lane at 9 p.m. and three lanes at 10 p.m.  Crews will open all lanes by 5 a.m. the next day. On Monday, October 31, crews will start paving the northbound I-95/I-495 (outer loop of the Capital Beltway) Bridge over the Amtrak Railroad.  SHA will again close one lane at 9 p.m. and three lanes at 10 p.m., reopening all lanes open by 5 a.m. Tuesday.

SHA’s contractor, Concrete General of Gaithersburg, will use arrow boards and barrels to maintain a single lane during the paving operations.  SHA expects major delays for drivers using the Capital Beltway during the paving work.  Travelers should avoid the area and use alternate routes such as the Montgomery County side of the Beltway. SHA is urging motorists to plan for extra time if traveling this route during the lane closures.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
