Major Traffic Impacts Possible - Drivers Should Plan for Extra Travel Time
(January 12, 2017) – Area travelers are advised to plan ahead for traffic impacts on MD 97 and MD 355 this weekend beginning Saturday, January 14. Private companies will temporary close lanes for commercial crane activity on the two Montgomery County roads.
MD 97 Closure in Silver Spring
Weather permitting, beginning midnight on Saturday, January 14, Crane Service, Inc. will close three right northbound lanes on MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) between Cameron Street and US 29 (Colesville Road) in Silver Spring. A northbound left lane will remain open during the crane operation. Progress permitting, all lanes should reopen no later than 4 p.m. Sunday, January 15.
Crews require the lane closures to assemble a crane at 8621 Georgia Avenue. Those with questions regarding the work on Georgia Avenue should contact Richard Mazzella of Crane Services, Inc. at 301-333-6200.
MD 355 Closure in Bethesda
Beginning at 9 a.m. this Saturday, Traffic Engineering Services will close all lanes on southbound MD 355 (Wisconsin Avenue) between Cordell Avenue and Battery Lane in Bethesda to hoist equipment onto the roof at 8200 Wisconsin Avenue. All traffic lanes should reopen by 9 p.m. Saturday night. Drivers should follow posted detour route of Battery Lane, Woodmont Avenue and Cordell Avenue.
Crane operations will take place on Saturday, January 28 if the operation this weekend is cancelled due to weather. Various phases of the crane work may be disruptive. Both companies will safely direct pedestrian traffic around the work zone. Pedestrians will be directed to signalized crossings on the opposite side of the road during all phases of work for safety reasons.
