Work to Continue Through spring; Drivers Should Plan Extra Travel Time

(March 13, 2017) – Beginning Friday night, March 24, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will resume paving on the inner loop of I-495 (Capital Beltway) between the I-270 spur and Seminary Road in Kensington, Montgomery County.  Weather and progress permitting, the work should be complete early-spring.

Crews will use the ramp and lane closures to resurface all lanes on the inner loop of I-495 over MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue) and the Kensington Parkway.  Each weekend, crews are permitted to close:

• Ramp from southbound MD 185 to the inner loop of I-495 between 10 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday; and

• Three left lanes or three right lanes on the inner loop of I-495 between MD 355 (Wisconsin Avenue) and MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) between 10 p.m., Friday and 5 a.m. Monday.

Drivers should consider the approved detour route of southbound MD 185, then make a right on Jones Bridge Road and a right on MD 355 to access I-495.

Crews will also inspect roadway joints in all travel lanes and apply new pavement markings. Work is not scheduled for the weekend of April 14-17.  This work is part of an ongoing $9.8 million safety and resurfacing project that started summer 2016.

Drivers should plan ahead and expect delays. For the latest real-time travel information, log onto www.md511.org or call 1-855-466-3511 using a hands-free device.  Customers with questions about this work may contact the SHA District 3 Office at 301-513-7300.
