Motorists Should Expect Single Lane Closures

(March 24, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will improve the intersection of MD 97 (Roxbury Mills Road) at Burntwoods Road, beginning the week of April 3.  Weather permitting, the $3.6 million project will be complete summer 2018.

“The project will improve traffic flow and safety,” said SHA Acting District 7 Engineer John Concannon.  “SHA thanks area drivers in advance for your patience when traveling through the construction zone. Please slow down and stay alert for work crews.”

SHA’s contractor, Locust Lane Farms, Inc. of Upper Marlboro will construct the following safety and alignment improvements:

• Adding an acceleration lane for motorists turning right onto MD 97 from Burntwoods Road;
• Widening MD 97 for a through lane and a new left turn lane to Burntwoods Road;
• Widening and lengthening the right turn lane on MD 97 (north or south) for motorists turning right onto Burntwoods Road;
• Widening Burntwoods Road for a left and right turn lane for motorists accessing MD 97; and
• Storm drainage, traffic barriers, new signage and a new traffic beacon will also be added to the intersection.

Crews will use a flagging operation to guide motorists through the work zone, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Additionally, crews will work behind barrier walls along the shoulders of the roadway.

Approximately 10,900 vehicles use this section of MD 97 each day.  Those who have questions about SHA projects in Howard County may call the SHA District 7 Office at 301-624-8100, toll-free at 1-800-635-5119 or send email to shadistrict7@sha.state.md.us.
