Seasoned Veterans Selected to Serve Districts 5 and 7, Covering Parts of Southeastern and Northwestern Maryland

(May 26, 2017) – Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Secretary Pete K. Rahn and MDOT State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) Administrator Gregory Slater today announced the appointments of Corren Johnson as District 5 Engineer for Anne Arundel, Charles, Calvert, St. Mary’s counties and John Concannon as District 7 Engineer for Frederick, Howard and Carroll counties.

“MDOT is building a national model for leadership, and these two make us even stronger,” said Transportation Secretary Rahn.

“We welcome both Corren and John to our senior management team,” said Administrator Slater. “I look forward to working with them as we undertake an historic level of construction projects to reduce congestion and enhance customer service.”

Both appointments were effective May 24, 2017.

About District 5 Engineer Corren Johnson:

Johnson will manage all district operations, including maintenance, construction, project development, access permits and traffic operations for Southern Maryland and Anne Arundel County. In her role, she also is responsible for leading more than 330 engineers, technicians, maintenance personnel, consultants and support staff dedicated to the safety and mobility of our customers traveling on nearly 2,900 lane-miles and 400 bridges.
 
Johnson comes to District 5 with 13 years of experience at MDOT SHA and additional construction experience with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. She has worked across a myriad of engineering disciplines, ranging from highway design, construction, access permits, and traffic operations. For the past four years, she has served as Traffic Operations Division Chief in the Office of Traffic and Safety.

Johnson has a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil / Environmental Engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and a Master of Science degree in Project Management from the University of Maryland University College. She is a recent graduate of MDOT SHA’s Advanced Leadership Program and is the MDOT SHA Operations Representative for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Operations Center of Excellence.

An active mentor to high school girls in the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) Transportation YOU Program, Johnson also mentors other aspiring or newer engineers. She considers herself in the “people business” and has a passion for helping others with their personal and professional development. Johnson is married with three children and lives in Baltimore.

About District 7 Engineer John Concannon:

In his new role, Concannon will manage all district operations including maintenance, construction, project development, access permits and traffic operations for Central Maryland. He also is responsible for leading more than 300 engineers, technicians, maintenance personnel, consultants and support staff dedicated to the safety and mobility of our customers traveling on nearly 2,500 lane-miles and 450 bridges.
 
Concannon has more than 27 years of experience with MDOT SHA. He began his career as a transportation engineer in the Office of Traffic and Safety within the Traffic Engineering Design Division. In 1995, he became Assistant District Engineer of Traffic for District 7. For 20 years, Concannon has worked to establish a multitude of traffic design and operational improvements.
 
Concannon has a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Pennsylvania State University. He also has completed MDOT SHA’s Advanced Leadership Program and is a graduate of the University of Maryland University College National Leadership Institute Leadership Development Program. He also serves as Co-Chair of Maryland’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan, Highway Infrastructure Emphasis Area Team 2016-2020.  Concannon lives in Frederick with his wife and four children.
