MDOT SHA to Close and Detour the Glen Arm Leg of the Harford Road/Glen Arm Road/Mt. Vista Road Intersection for Three Months

(June 20, 2017) – Weather permitting, beginning 9 a.m. Thursday, June 22, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will temporarily close access to Glen Arm Road at MD 147 (Harford Road) as crews begin the final phase of the $3.7 roundabout installation at the Harford Road (MD 147) intersection with Glen Arm and Mt. Vista roads in Baltimore County.  Simultaneously, crews will re-open access to Mt. Vista Road at MD 147, which has been closed since last summer to construct the first half of the roundabout.  Glen Arm Road will be closed at Harford Road until early fall, weather permitting.

Northbound and southbound Harford Road will remain open to traffic during construction.  MDOT SHA will post signs with the following detour route during the temporary Glen Arm Road closure:  Harford Road to Long Green Pike to Glen Arm Road.

“Harford Road is a popular route for drivers traveling between Harford and Baltimore counties, and Glen Arm Road and Mt. Vista Road are key connectors to rural communities,” said SHA District 4 Engineer Wendy Wolcott.  “Reconstruction of this intersection to a roundabout will improve safety for all travelers.  SHA appreciates drivers’ patience and caution during construction work and detours.”

Commuters and commercial vehicle drivers should plan for extra travel time on Harford Road and the detour routes during the next year.  The new roundabout should be complete by late fall, weather permitting.  Citizens with questions about the roundabout construction project may call SHA’s District Four Office – Construction Division at 410-229-2300 or toll-free at 1-866-998-0367.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.

A listing of major roadway projects is included in e-Road Ready 2017, the online brochure. Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including delays and lane closures.
