Motorists Should Expect Single and Double Lane Closures

(June 26, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will resurface US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) between US 29 (Columbia Pike) and the Baltimore County Line in Ellicott City after July 4th.  Weather permitting, the $2.3 million project will be complete by early fall.

The road was last resurfaced in 2000.  MDOT SHA will patch, grind (remove the top layer of asphalt), pave and restripe more than 2.7 miles of US 40.  Crews will also repair or upgrade guardrails within the project limits. Most of the project will occur at night, Sundays through Fridays between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. MDOT SHA’s contractor, Allan Myers MD, Inc. of Fallston, is permitted to close two lanes during construction.

Crews will use barrels, message signs and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.  Approximately 47,000 vehicles use this section of US 40 each day so motorists should plan extra travel time during project work hours.

Also beginning in July, crews will resurface more than three miles of US 1 (Washington Boulevard) between MD 103A (Montgomery Road) (MD 103A) and Kit Kat Road in Elkridge. MDOT SHA awarded the $3 million project to C.J. Miller, LLC of Hampstead.  The project will be complete by late-fall, weather permitting.

Last resurfaced 30 years ago, US 1 needs new pavement and pavement markings.  Crews will also repair or upgrade guardrails within the project limits. Motorists should expect single lane closures. Approximately 35,000 vehicles travel on this section of US 1 each day.  Crews will work 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Sundays through Friday mornings to minimize delays.

The e-Road Ready 2017 electronic construction brochure is now available by clicking here.  The e-brochure highlights major road construction and maintenance projects in each of Maryland’s 23 counties.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver need to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
