Motorists Should Expect Daytime and Nighttime Single Lane Closures

(June 26, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will resurface I-70 between Ashton Road and just west of the Conococheague Creek Bridge in Clear Spring.  The project will begin after July 4th and, weather permitting, the $4.2 million project will be complete late-fall.

MDOT SHA’s contractor, C. William Hetzer of Hagerstown, will patch, grind (remove the top layer of pavement), resurface, restripe and replace guardrail on the roadway.  Due to high traffic volumes, including a large percentage of truck traffic, the work will take place at night, Sundays through Thursdays between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.  Motorists can expect single lane and shoulder closures during work hours.

Approximately 33,000 vehicles use this four-mile section of I-70 each day. Motorists should plan extra travel time during the work.  SHA will use barrels, dynamic message signs and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.

The e-Road Ready 2017 electronic construction brochure is now available by clicking here.  The e-brochure highlights major road construction and maintenance projects in each of MDOT SHA’s seven engineering districts which cover Maryland’s 23 counties.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver need to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.

Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting http://www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
