New Flashing Signal at MD 586 and Turkey Branch Parkway (Matthew Henson Trail) Includes Red Phase to Stop Traffic for Pedestrian / Bicycle Crossing

(July 7, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) today is activating a new overhead pedestrian signal at MD 586 (Veirs Mill Road) and Turkey Branch Parkway / Matthew Henson Trail.  The signal displays a constant flashing yellow caution light until a pedestrian or bicyclist presses the cross button.  Once a pedestrian or bicyclist activates the “walk” button, the signal flashes fast yellow, changes to solid yellow and then solid red, stopping all vehicular traffic on Veirs Mill Road.

“We are fully committed to enhancing safety for all travelers along our roadways,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Gregory Slater. “With pedestrians accounting for one fifth of the yearly traffic deaths, it is crucial that we work together on new engineering solutions and approaches, continual education of the important elements of safety and in strategic partnership with law enforcement so that we can all get home safely.”

Approximately 42,000 vehicles travel Veirs Mill Road daily, and pedestrians and bicyclists often travel Matthew Henson Trail for commuting and recreation.  The new signal features pedestrian indicators, which will provide a “walk” signal and notify pedestrians and bicyclists how much time is available to complete their crossing.  One activation of the “walk” button on either side of the Matthew Henson Trail will stop traffic along both directions of Veirs Mill Road.

Portable variable message signs on Veirs Mill Road and the Matthew Henson Trail alert drivers and trail users of new signal.  Together with local partners, MDOT will deploy safety ambassadors along the Matthew Henson Trail and surrounding community in the coming weeks to educate pedestrians and bicyclists that they must press the button to stop traffic and cross safely.
