(July 10, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will open the MD 16 (Church Creek Road) / Woods Road roundabout in Cambridge on Wednesday, July 12.  Completed four months ahead of schedule, the $3.5 million roundabout will enhance safety operations for nearly 4,900 motorists who travel in this area daily.

“Roundabouts are proven to reduce severe injury and fatal crashes while keeping traffic flowing.  The new roundabout will enhance safety for Cambridge residents, business travelers and visitors,” said MDOT SHA District 1 Engineer Jay Meredith.  “We appreciate residents’ patience during the construction.”

Between 2011 and 2016, there were 13 crashes at the Woods Road/Church Creek Road intersection, with two crashes resulting in fatalities.  Roundabouts provide a traffic calming effect by reducing speeds and creating a constant one-way movement of traffic, minimizing the chance for angle collisions.  Statewide, MDOT SHA has installed approximately 100 roundabouts over the last two decades, reducing injury crashes by 75 percent and eliminating all intersection-related fatalities.  This roundabout will be the first SHA-maintained roundabout in Dorchester County.

MDOT SHA awarded the contract to JJID, Inc. of Bear, Del.  Those who may have more questions about the project may call MDOT SHA’s District 1 Office at 410-677-4000. Roundabout driving tips are available on the SHA website.  Highway construction is underway statewide and project information is available in the e-Road Ready 2017 electronic construction brochure.  It highlights major road construction projects in each of Maryland’s 23 counties.
