Temporary Traffic Signal to Alternate Traffic

(July 18, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is replacing the bridge on MD 496 (Bachmans Valley Road) over Big Pipe Creek in the Carroll County city of Westminster.  The $4 million project will be complete summer 2018, weather permitting.

“These crucial investments in major commuter routes serve our citizens, businesses, and emergency personnel and support the local economy and quality of life of the citizens of Carroll County,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Gregory Slater.

The bridge, constructed in 1932, is safe but has outlived its useful service life and needs to be replaced.  The new bridge will include two 11-foot-wide lanes and two nine-foot-wide shoulders that will safely accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists.

About 3,700 vehicles use this portion of MD 496 each day.  MDOT SHA’s contractor Six-M Company, Inc. of Delta, PA   will close one lane of traffic during construction.  Motorists will be alternated across the bridge with a temporary traffic signal on each side of the bridge.

The Hogan Administration is making record investments in highways and bridges and is working to repair or replace all 69 structurally deficient bridges inherited by the Administration.

The e-Road Ready 2017 electronic construction brochure is now available by clicking here. The e-brochure highlights major road construction and maintenance projects in each of MDOT SHA’s seven engineering districts, which cover Maryland’s 23 counties.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes.  Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down, and don’t follow too closely.  Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.

Maryland drivers also can know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
