Motorists Should Plan for Extra Travel Time During Work Hours

(July 28, 2017) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin resurfacing MD 5 (Branch Avenue) between Moores Road and Surratts Road in Brandywine/Clinton. The $4.5 million project should be complete summer 2018, weather permitting.

Crews will remove the top layer of asphalt and apply new asphalt and pavement markings. Other work on the project include:

• Creating bicycle lanes through line striping;

• Repairing roadside slopes and stabilizing soil to prevent roadway erosion;

• Upgrading drainage systems;

• Replacing damaged guardrails; and

• Repairing damaged curbs and gutters.

To complete all phases, crews are permitted to close the following lanes on MD 5:

• Northbound MD 5 – Single lane closures Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and Sundays through Friday mornings between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

• Southbound MD 5 – Single lane closures Mondays through Fridays between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.  and Sundays through Friday mornings between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

More than 82,000 vehicles use this section of MD 5 each day so motorists should plan accordingly for extra travel time.

Equipment used for construction may be disruptive. Additional work hours and lane closures may be necessary to expedite all phases of work. MDOT SHA’s contractor for the work is Francis O. Day Co. of Rockville.
