Project Addresses Another Structurally Deficient Bridge

(April 2, 2018) – The Hogan Administration announces the start of construction to replace the MD 86 (Lineboro Road) Bridge over the south branch of the Gunpowder River in Carroll County. The $5.3 million project addresses another of the 69 structurally deficient bridges that Governor Larry Hogan identified when he took office and promised to fix in June 2015.

“I am pleased our projects, which are rehabilitating or replacing deficient bridges throughout our State, are being delivered to Marylanders,” said Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) Administrator Greg Slater.

MDOT SHA will begin the project in the coming weeks. The project will be complete spring 2021. The 86-year-old bridge is safe but has exceeded its practical service life and needs to be replaced. To minimize impacts to drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians, MDOT SHA will build the new bridge adjacent to the existing bridge, eliminating daily lane closures and traffic shifts. Nearly 17,000 trips are made on this bridge each day.

The replacement bridge, a two-span prestressed concrete slab bridge, will be wider than the current bridge. The new bridge will have 12-foot lanes with 5-foot shoulders. Adding shoulders to the bridge will make it safer for bicyclists and pedestrians to utilize the MD 86 bridge, which is designated as a scenic byway. Crews will also realign the roadway making it easier for large vehicles to turn from Tracey’s Mill Road onto MD 86.
