Project Months Ahead of Schedule

(April 18, 2018) – Afternoon commuters in Hereford will be some of the very first drivers to use the new MD 137 (Mt. Carmel Road) Bridge over I-83 (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway) in Herford, Baltimore County. Crews are shifting traffic from the temporary bridge to the new structure in time for the afternoon rush hour. The entire project is more than two months ahead of schedule and should be complete late-summer.

Once the traffic switch is complete, crews will begin removing the temporary bridge that carried MD 137 over I-83 during demolition of the old bridge and construction of the new structure. Using the temporary bridge helped MDOT SHA work on the $7.3 million project safely and efficiently.

Other work that remains include slight widening on MD 137 at the bridge approaches to accommodate the new center turn lane on the bridge, storm water management work, concrete curb and gutter installation and landscaping.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
