New Traffic Signal to Enhance Safety and Ease Congestion

(May 17, 2018) – Tomorrow morning, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will activate a new traffic signal on Marriottsville Road at the ramp from westbound I-70 in Howard County. The new traffic signal replaces the stop sign and will enhance safety and enhance intersection operations.

The free-right turn will remain in place at the intersection, with the new traffic signal directing the left turn movement from the westbound I-70 ramp to Marriottsville Road. Approximately 81,000 vehicles use I-70 in this area.

MDOT SHA placed the new traffic signal on flash Monday to help familiarize motorists with the new traffic signal. Crews will turn the traffic signal to full-color operation after tomorrow’s morning rush hour.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
