Intersection Reconstruction to Include New Traffic Signals and Left Turn Lanes

(July 30, 2018) - This week, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin reconstructing the US 50 (Ocean Gateway)/ (MD 353) Sixty Foot Road intersection in Pittsville. The project will be complete spring 2019.

Improvements include replacing the existing flashing lights at the intersection with full-color traffic signals, constructing new left turn lanes, reconstructing acceleration and deceleration lanes and landscaping. The $3.14 million project will improve intersection safety and efficiency with these new improvements. Upon completion, the intersection will closely resemble the US 50/Walston Switch Road intersection, which is located 4.5 miles to the west.

MDOT SHA’s contractor, David A. Bramble, Inc. of Chestertown, are permitted to close a single lane daytime during off-peak hours. In later construction phases, MDOT SHA will close the median for worker and motorist safety, detouring traffic to nearby intersections until all median work is complete.

An average of 31,000 vehicles travel this portion of US 50 each day and volumes are significantly higher during the summer months as US 50 is a primary route to Ocean City. More than 5,000 vehicles travel on Sixty Foot Road each day.

Next spring, MDOT SHA will place the new traffic signal on flash mode for three days before full-color operation to alert drivers of the new intersection. Variable message signs will also be placed on all legs of the intersection alerting motorists of the new traffic signal.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
