(December 4, 2018) – Beginning Thursday night, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will close a single lane on northbound MD 5 (Branch Avenue) between the MD 5 (Mattawoman Beantown Road)/US 301 (Crain Highway) split and MD 381 (Brandywine Road) and one a single lane on southbound MD 5 between south of Moores Road and MD 373 (Accokeek Road). The closures will begin at 8 p.m. and are necessary to expedite utility relocation work related to the MD 5/MD 373/MD 381 interchange project. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Friday.

Additionally, the traffic signal located at the MD 5/MD 381 intersection be temporarily deenergized at 8 p.m. Thursday night until 5 a.m. Friday. The intersection will be controlled by a flagging operation with the assistance of Maryland State Police. Crews will return in mid-December to complete the utility work using the same lane closures and work times.

Although traffic volumes are significantly lower at night, drivers should add extra commuting time during utility relocation operations as this is a heavily travelled area of Prince George’s county. Commuters should consider using US 301 (Crain Highway) as an alternative route.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands. For a list of all major MDOT SHA projects, click on Road Ready, MDOT SHA's electronic construction brochure.
