(May 24, 2019) – Beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday, May 31 and continuing until 5 a.m. on Monday, June 3, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will close the MD 28 (Dickerson Road) Bridge over the Monocacy River in Dickerson. The total closure and detour are necessary to set concrete barrier in advance of the installation and activation of a temporary traffic signal that will alternate traffic throughout the duration of the bridge rehabilitation project.

MDOT SHA will detour travelers using MD 109 (Old Hundred Road), MD 355 (Urbana Pike), MD 80 (Fingerboard Road) and MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike). Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time if traveling during the closure.

After the total closure ends on Monday, June 3, MDOT SHA will open one lane of MD 28 and alternate traffic until spring 2020 utilizing two temporary traffic signals installed at both ends of the bridge. The single lane closure is necessary for MDOT SHA’s contractor, Corman Kokosing Construction Company of Annapolis Junction, to complete the work. There will be additional bridge closures on weekends as needed throughout the rehabilitation project. MDOT SHA will issue traffic alerts and utilize VMS boards to notify motorists approximately one week before a total closure begins.

While the bridge is structurally sound, the bridge deck has outlived its useful service life and needs to be replaced. The construction will include replacing the bridge deck, replacing sections of the steel truss bridge structure, repairing the concrete bridge piers and removing years of debris buildup under the bridge. The entire project is expected to be complete spring 2020.

Approximately 9,300 vehicles use this section of MD 28 each day.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our contractor. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on the road and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Drive like you work here and slowdown in construction zones.
