(July 18, 2019) –Beginning Sunday night, July 21, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will close multiple lanes in both directions, including brief overnight total closures on I-495 (Capital Beltway) between MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) and MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue). The work is to install structural steel on the Seminary Road Bridge over I-495 in Silver Spring.

The work will take place Sundays through Thursdays from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning. MDOT SHA will close a single lane at 9 p.m., two lanes at 10 p.m. and three lanes at 11 p.m. There will be intermittent brief, 15-minute total stoppages between 12 midnight and 4 a.m. Lanes will reopen each morning by 5 a.m.

All beams should be secured and in place by mid-August.

Motorists may want to consider using MD 193 (University Boulevard) or MD 410 (East West highway) as nighttime alternate routes.

MDOT SHA’s contractor, Anchor Construction of Washington D.C., will use barrels and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone. Law enforcement will also assist in conducting and overseeing the traffic stops.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our contractor. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on the road and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Drive like you work here and slowdown in construction zones.
