New road signs installed on northbound US 15. (November 2019)

(February 24, 2020) –Beginning Monday, February 24 at 9 p.m., the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will close both lanes of southbound US 15 (Jefferson National Pike) and the left lane of northbound US 15 under the MD 180 (Jefferson Pike) bridge to install steel girders on the new MD 180 bridge in Frederick.

The overnight work is scheduled until 5 a.m. on weekdays from Monday, February 24 through Friday, March 6. The closures are necessary to keep motorists safe as the contractor stages and erects the steel girders.

MDOT SHA’s contractor, Concrete General Inc. of Gaithersburg, will work with Maryland State Police to detour all southbound US 15 traffic past Jefferson Street to the MD 180/MD 351 (Ballenger Creek Pike) exit lane, around the work zone and back onto US 15. During the overnight work, both directions of travel on US 15 in this area will be occasionally stopped for up to 15 minutes at a time.

The work is part of a project to improve safety and reduce congestion on MD 180 between Solarex Court and Swallowtail Drive. The $17 million project’s new two-lane bridge is expected to open to traffic this fall. The entire project is scheduled to be complete by summer 2021.

Approximately, 52,000 motorists travel through this section of US 15 every day.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for motorists, as well as our crews. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.
