(March 27, 2020) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will close the right lane of eastbound I-70 at Exit 52 to US 15 (Jefferson National Pike) on Sunday night to perform emergency repairs to the bridge over US 15. Exit 52 on westbound I-70 will also close so crews can safely use the ramp to work underneath the bridge. The closures are necessary to install planking braces underneath the eastbound and westbound I-70 bridges over US 15.

MDOT SHA will use electronic message boards, signs and traffic cones to guide motorists on I-70 west through the detour as follows:

  • Motorists traveling on westbound I-70 to southbound US 15, continue on westbound I-70. Take Exit 49 to US 40 Alternate (Old National Pike) and make a left turn at the signal onto westbound US 40 Alt. Then take the next left turn onto eastbound I-70 and proceed to Exit 52A to continue to your destination.

Maryland State Police will also be assisting with traffic control. Approximately 91,000 vehicles travel through this section of I-70 every day.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on the road and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. For a list of all major MDOT SHA projects, go to roads.maryland.gov. Editor’s Note

MDOT SHA has a record amount of highway construction projects underway across the state to reduce congestion and improve safety.  From intersection improvements to widening and new interchange construction, MDOT SHA is investing in projects to enhance the commute and daily travel for millions of Marylanders.  MDOT SHA maintains more than 2,500 bridges and 17,000 miles of non-toll state roads – the interstate, US and state numbered routes in Maryland’s 23 counties.
