Daytime Left-Lane Closures Expected Mondays-Thursdays Into Mid-October

(August 24, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin an intersection improvement project next week on westbound US 340 (Jefferson Pike) at Valley Road in the Knoxville area of Washington County. Weather permitting, the project will begin Monday, August 29, and continue until Mid-October.

During the project, the left-turn lanes on westbound US 340 at Valley Road will be closed 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays to allow crews to safely install a new raised median and signage, and perform excavation. Barrels and cones will be in place to close the left-turn lanes, and signage will direct motorists. NOTE: Motorists traveling on westbound US 340 will be able to turn left onto Valley Road using the through lane.

MDOT SHA’s contractor C. William Hetzer, of Hagerstown will perform the work. The project  is part of a $497,000 areawide initiative to improve intersection capacity, provide congestion relief and enhance safety at various locations in Washington County.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving, and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.

Editor’s Note

From intersection improvements to widening and new interchange construction, MDOT SHA is investing in projects to enhance the commute and daily travel for millions of Marylanders.  MDOT SHA maintains more than 2,500 bridges and 17,000 miles of non-toll state roads – the interstate, US and state numbered routes in Maryland’s 23 counties.
