Flagging Operation Planned During Repair; Plan Extra Commuting Time

(February 5, 2024) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin making bridge repairs to the US 340 bridge over the Potomac River and CSX rail tracks in Washington County at the Virginia line on Monday, February 12. The repairs should be complete by Friday, February 16, weather permitting.

Crews will make repairs to the bridge superstructure (the metal members that support the bridge deck) in the eastbound direction of US 340. Motorists can expect a flagging operation to alternate traffic using the westbound lane. The work will take place Monday through Friday,  9 a.m.-3 p.m. In addition to the flagging operation, motorists should expect one brief 15-minute closure of the bridge as part of the repair.

The State Highway Administration’s contractor, Harbel, Inc. Cumberland, will use cones, barrels, and flaggers to guide motorists through the work zone. Drivers are asked to slow down and pay close attention while driving through the work zone.

The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience during this necessary work to maintain and improve Maryland’s transportation system and keep it in a state of good repair. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused, and slow down in work zones and look for reduced speed limits as traffic patterns will change in construction zones.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
