Speed Limit Changes on Nearly Two-Mile Section of Roadway Known as the “Golden Mile” in Frederick

(February 13, 2024) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is lowering the speed limit from 45 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour on US 40 (West Patrick Street) between US 15 and Old Camp Road, a span of nearly two miles, known as the Golden Mile in Frederick starting this week.

The change is the result of the State Highway Administration’s recent traffic engineering study, which shows a lower speed limit will better align with existing motorist speeds, roadway geometry and pedestrian use.

The Golden Mile is home to hundreds of businesses and surrounded by many residential neighborhoods and schools resulting in heavy pedestrian traffic. This section of US 40 sees between 45,000 and 120,000 vehicles every day.

The State Highway Administration’s Frederick Shop will remove the existing signs and install new 35 mile per hour speed limit signs this week along both eastbound and westbound travel lanes.
