​Project near Hagerstown Improves Safety and Ride Quality for Motorists 

(February 15, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has completed construction of a $34.6 million project widening and rehabilitation project for the 1-70 bridges over MD 65 (Sharpsburg Pike) and CSX railroad near Hagerstown in Washington County. Improvements include:

  • replacement and widening of two bridges on I-70 over MD 65,
  • widening two other bridges on I-70 over CSX railroad,
  • resurfacing portions of I-70 and the ramps at the I-70/MD 65 Interchange and the I-70/US 40 interchange,
  • widening and resurfacing portions of MD 65 and
  • lighting improvements, upgraded signage and installing new traffic barriers.

The project began in spring 2020, and work zone safety was a fundamental element of construction. A reduced speed limit was in place throughout the project.

The project is part of the State Highway Administration’s commitment to preserve and maintain Maryland’s critical infrastructure. The rehabilitation work improves safety and ensures the long-term viability of the bridges, originally constructed in 1968. Learn more about the project here.​
