Truck Carrying Oversized Load Struck Pedestrian Bridge; Structure Closed to Pedestrians out of an Abundance of Caution

(May 13, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has closed a pedestrian bridge that spans US 50 (John Hanson Highway) near MD 197 (Collington Road) in Bowie. A truck carrying an oversized load, hauling an excavator, struck the bridge last night, May 12.

The bridge is safe for vehicles to travel under but will require several structural repairs. The bridge will be closed to pedestrians until repairs are complete. The emergency repairs are expected to take several weeks, weather permitting. Work will require road closures and will be performed primarily during overnight hours when traffic volumes are lower.

The State Highway Administration will provide additional updates on upcoming lane closures and the reopening of the structure to pedestrians when information becomes available.

The State Highway Administration works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving, and look for reduced speed limits as well as other traffic pattern changes.
