Drivers Should Plan Extra Travel Time During Sidewalk Construction

(April 22, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a project to close approximately 30 feet of sidewalk and a single drive lane on MD 197 (Laurel Bowie Road) across the street from the Rockledge Elementary School to modify the entry way for the new Bowie Ice Rink. Work will start on April 23rd and end on April 24th, weather permitting. Work hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the closure to remain until concrete has enough time to cure.

The State Highway Administration’s contractor, Warner Construction has hired One Source Utility Service, LLC, of White Marsh, MD. The contractor will use concrete barriers, electronic message signs, cones, and barrels to guide drivers safely through the work zone.

The State Highway Administration is Serious About Safety.  Pedestrians and motorists are urged to remain alert and avoid distractions when traveling through the work zone. Motorists should obey all posted speed limits. Motorists can dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
