Motorists Should Expect Temporary Nighttime Lane Closures and Detours

(May 4, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will temporarily close and detour the collector lane at the I-70/I-81 interchange in Washington County for two nights on May 5, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. The work will be completed by 5 a.m., May 7, weather permitting.

Drivers needing to access I-81 northbound from I-70 eastbound will be detoured onto I-81 southbound Exit 2 (Williamsport), then back onto I-81 northbound from there use Exit 4 to I-70 eastbound. Drivers needing to access I-70 eastbound from I-81 southbound will continue I-81 southbound to Exit 2 (Williamsport). Take I-81 north to Exit 4 to I-70 east.

The nighttime work is necessary to perform a bridge deck concrete pour on the bridge rehabilitation work at the I-70/I-81 interchange.

State Highway Administration contractor Triton Construction, Inc. from St. Albans, WV will perform the work.  Motorists should plan extra travel time. Mainline traffic will not be impacted. Motorists will be guided by post mounted signs, channelizing devices and message boards.

The State Highway Administration is Serious About Safety. Pedestrians and motorists are urged to remain alert and avoid distractions when traveling through the work zone. Motorists should obey all posted speed limits. Motorists can dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
