(April 14, 2011) – This weekend, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close MD 135 (Westernport Road) east of Westernport in Allegany County.  SHA expects to close the roadway Saturday evening April 16 at 7 p.m. and open it by Sunday morning April 17 by 7 a.m., weather permitting.

Because of recent heavy rains, debris continues to pile up along the southern side of Dan’s Mountain.  To prevent it from falling on the road, SHA will close the road for equipment staging and debris removal this weekend.  SHA will detour motorists as follows:

• Motorists traveling east will be directed north on US 220 (McMullen Highway) to west on I-68 to south on MD 36 (New Georges Creek Road) back to MD 135.
• Motorists traveling west will be directed north on MD 36 to east on I-68 to south on US 220 back to MD 135.

Customers who have questions about traffic operations on MD 135, US 220, I-68,MD 36, or other State numbered routes in Allegany County may call SHA’s District 6 Office at 301-729-8400 or toll free at 1-800-760-7138.

Construction season is here with numerous active work zone sites that include major construction projects taking months to complete and mobile operations taking only minutes.  While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.
