(May 12, 2011) – Tonight the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will close up to three lanes of the Inner Loop of I-495 (Capital Beltway) in Silver Spring.  The one-night closure will allow crews to install markings and perform construction surveys prior to the start of the Northwest Branch Bridge rehabilitation project in Montgomery County.

Crews will begin closing the right lane on the Inner Loop at 8 p.m., followed by the right center lane at 10 p.m. and the left center lane at midnight.  Work is taking place along two and one-half miles of I-495 between MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue) and MD 193 (University Boulevard).  All lanes will be open by 5 a.m. Friday, May 13. Work is contingent upon weather and the lane closure is necessary to ensure worker and motorist safety.

For more information about SHA-maintained projects in Montgomery County, customers may contact the SHA District 3 Office at 301-513-7300 or toll-free at 1-800-749-0737.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.  Follow SHA on Twitter @MDSHA.
