(June 20, 2011) – Today, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is performing asphalt work along a section of MD 140 (Baltimore Street) between MD 194 (Frederick Street/York Street) and Trevanion Road in Taneytown.

Eastbound and westbound MD 140 traffic will be shifted to outside lanes, which allows crews to perform asphalt work in the center of MD 140.  Three layers of base asphalt will be applied and must be allowed to settle and cool before MD 140 is reopened to traffic.

Work began at 8 a.m. and is expected to be complete no later than midnight.  All lanes should reopen to traffic by Tuesday by 5 a.m., weather permitting.  Flaggers will alternate traffic through the work zone. Motorists should expect major delays.  More than 13,000 vehicles travel on this section of MD 140 each day.

The work is part of SHA’s overall $18 million “streetscape” project which is expected to be complete this fall.  Remaining work on the overall streetscape project includes placing the final resurfacing on MD 140 between MD 194 and Harney Road; resurfacing the south side of MD 140 between the town square and the railroad crossing and resurfacing the MD 140/MD 194 intersection.

The traffic signals at the MD 140/Baumgardner Road intersection will be upgraded, along with new signals at Trevanion Road, Chevro Road and the square will be replaced and crews will install new ornamental lighting.
