Innovation is key to lessening highway impact on the environment. At every stage of our work – from design to maintenance – the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) strives to employ green technology. It lets us decrease our impact on the environment, conserve resources and reduce costs.
We investigate, test, and deploy new practices that move towards a more sustainable, greener highway system. We explain the importance of recycling and reducing litter on the State’s highways.
We look toward the future with the help of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), access management, and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
Maintenance for MDOT SHA means removing highway litter, mowing grass that blocks highway visibility, cleaning roads and ditches, keeping our fleet in good repair and responding forcefully to winter weather.
