Regional Planning

You can obtain information on long-range MDOT SHA projects, studies and initiatives from the Regional and Intermodal Planning Division, part of the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) Office of Planning and Preliminary Engineering (OPPE). Regional and Intermodal Planning staff coordinate with county and municipal governments and with Maryland's seven metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) to develop MDOT SHA’s portion of Maryland’s Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) and each metropolitan area’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).

In addition, staff help prepare the Highway Needs Inventory (HNI), MDOT SHA's long-range, financially-unconstrained planning document, which serves as a source of candidate projects for MDOT's Consolidated Transportation Program (CTP).

Regional planners cover specific counties. Use this table to find the regional planner who can help you. You may also send questions concerning long-range planning by email to planning@mdot.maryland.gov or by phone toll-free at 1-888-204-4282.
