(April 23, 2012) – Tomorrow night, Tuesday April 24, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will close three lanes and perform intermittent total closures on I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) at MD 201 (Kenilworth Avenue) to install new steel beams for the MD 201 Bridge over I-495/I-95 in Greenbelt. Crews will open all lanes by 8 a.m., Wednesday morning.

SHA will close one northbound lane of I-95/I-495 at 7 p.m., then two lanes at 9 p.m. and three lanes of northbound I-95/I-495 at 10 p.m. to install the steel beams.  Crews will close all lanes for up to 30 minutes on I-95/I-495 between 12 midnight and 6 a.m.  Subsequent temporary overnight lane closures may occur on both directions of I-95/I-495 at MD 201 through mid-June.

The work is part of SHA’s $5 million project to replace the bridge deck (driving surface) and widening the MD 201 Bridge over I-95.  Work on the 49 year old bridge started spring 2010.    Weather permitting; the project will be complete in fall 2012.

SHA reminds all drivers to buckle up, obey posted speed limits, think orange, and stay alert.  Customers who have questions about traffic operations along MD 201 or other State numbered routes in Prince George’s County may contact SHA’s District 3 Office at 301-513-7300 or via   e-mail at shadistrict3@sha.state.md.us. Motorists should remember the rules of road and stay alert when driving through work zones.
