(April 10, 2019) – On Friday night, April 12, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will close one of three lanes on the outer loop I-695 (southbound Baltimore Beltway) between south of US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) and MD 144 (Frederick Road). The weekend closure is part of MDOT SHA’s $68-million project to widen the outer loop I-695 in Catonsville.

The single right lane closure will begin 9 p.m. and will be in effect until 5 a.m. Monday, April 15. There may be a need for crews to close two right lanes, which, if needed, will take place between 12 midnight and 5 a.m. each morning, retuning to a single lane closure.

The weekend-long single lane closure will allow construction crews to safely remove and re-install pavement markings, traffic signs and highway work zone barriers. Once that is complete, crews can shift the traffic lanes onto the new bridge carrying the outer loop of I-695 over Edmondson Avenue.

Approximately 200,000 vehicles use this section of the Beltway each day, so motorists are urged to plan travel accordingly and use alternate routes.

Construction work is expected to continue until late summer 2021. The contractor for this project is Tutor Perini Corporation, Inc. of New Rochelle, NY.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Drive like you work here and pay close attention to work zones.
