(April 14, 2022) – A new, temporary traffic pattern will be in place starting Monday night on MD 45 (York Road) in Cockeysville/Hunt Valley to allow a contractor with Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) to perform preventative maintenance on underground transmission cables. The work is part of BGE’s multi-year Electric Reliability Upgrade program.

Starting at 9 p.m. Monday, April 18, BGE contractor crews will work on two segments of York Road on a 24-hour/7-day-a-week schedule for approximately 60 days, weather permitting. The work is not an Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) project, though MDOT SHA is assisting BGE in raising public awareness.

During the work, BGE’s contractor will temporarily shift lanes on northbound and southbound York Road to create two work zones: one on northbound York Road near the intersection of Boxwood Lane and the other on southbound York Road near the intersection of Sherwood Road.

York Road will remain open in each direction throughout the work, and driveway access to businesses will remain open, with the following temporary alterations:

Northbound MD 45 (Work Zone #1)

  • MD 45 will be reduced to one northbound lane, while both southbound lanes will be maintained, but shifted, throughout the work zone.
  • The center turn lane will be restricted, eliminating left turns into and out of Coty Cosmetics, and several businesses along northbound (MD 45).
  • Affected businesses will maintain right-in and right-out access for the duration of the work.

Southbound MD 45 (Work Zone #2):

  • MD 45 will be reduced to one southbound lane while maintaining both northbound lanes throughout the work zone.
  • The center turn lane will be restricted, eliminating left turns into and out Sherwood Road.
  • Right-in and right-out access will be maintained for Sherwood Road and two driveways to the rear business parking lot.
  • Parking along southbound MD 45 will be maintained.

MDOT SHA advises travelers to allow extra travel time along York Road within the BGE work zones. BGE does not expect the electric service to be interrupted due to this upgrade work; if a temporary interruption is required, affected customers will be notified. Once the BGE work is complete, BGE will restore York Road to original roadway configuration.

BGE customers with questions may contact BGE’s project outreach team: Ms. Joy Hamilton at 240-583-7925 or Ms. Nikia Mack at 410-618-0105, or email BGEProject@bge.com and reference the “Shawan Road Substation Electric Reliability Upgrade Site 1.”  A member of the BGE project team will respond.
