Project Along One-Mile Section Will Improve Traffic Flow and Riding Surface
(June 15, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is beginning a project tonight, Wednesday, June 15, to resurface one mile of southbound I-270 (Eisenhower Highway) between MD 121 (Clarksburg Road) and MD 109 (Old Hundred Road) in Montgomery County. The resurfacing is part of an overall $4.3 million project to improve traffic flow by extending the acceleration lane along southbound I-270, beginning at the existing I-270 southbound truck weigh station, south of Old Hundred Road.
Crews are scheduled to work tonight beginning at 7 p.m., requiring single- and multiple-lane closures on southbound I-270 within the project limits overnight until 4 a.m. Thursday, June 16. Work will continue 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. Sunday evenings through Friday mornings through mid-July. All work is weather permitting, and additional workdays and times may be needed to expedite the project and keep all resurfacing and pavement marking activity on schedule. MDOT SHA’s contractor Concrete General Inc., of Gaithersburg, is performing the work.
Other elements of the larger project include installation of new guardrail, roadway drainage improvements, construction of stormwater management facilities and installation of new overhead roadway lighting along the one-mile stretch of highway. That additional work may also require single- or multiple-lane closures on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. All project-related activity is expected to be complete by late summer.
