Project Will Improve Pedestrian Accessibility in Downtown Upper Marlboro
(September 29, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin a $982,000 sidewalk improvement project this week on MD 725 (Main Street) from west of Service Lane to the east of Governor Oden Bowie Drive in the downtown area of Upper Marlboro.
"Improving the accessibility and safety for vulnerable users on our roadway system is crucial to our mission,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith. “Making it easier and safer for pedestrians to get around in downtown Upper Marlboro is an example of how we’re working every day to connect residents to life’s opportunities.”
The project is expected to be complete by spring 2023, weather permitting. The pedestrian accessibility work includes:
- Constructing curb, gutter, sidewalk and pedestrian ramps.
- Installing rectangular rapid-flashing beacons, signage and pavement markings.
- Reconstructing driveways.
Pedestrians and motorists should expect possible sidewalk and lane closures during the work. Weather permitting, crews will perform daytime work, Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and overnight work, 8 p.m. Sunday nights to 5 a.m. Friday mornings as needed. MDOT SHA contractor Vino Consulting Group, of Gambrills, will perform the work.
Beginning October 1, 2022, the Move Over Law in Maryland will require motorists to make a lane change or slow down when approaching any stopped, standing, or parked vehicle displaying hazard warning lights, road flares or other caution signals. The expanded law is in place to protect emergency responders and motorists who encounter a roadside emergency.
