Awards Indicative of Top-Quality Pavement Management Program

(June 23, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has received two 2022 Perpetual Pavement Awards from the Asphalt Pavement Alliance, a national coalition promoting the asphalt industry. In the organization’s annual awards, the agency earned honors in both Performance and Design categories.

“The State Highway Administration is honored to receive these prestigious industry accolades highlighting Perpetual Pavement Award by Performance and by Design, “said State Highway Administrator Tim Smith. “Every day, we’re committed to providing reliable and innovative ways to connect our customers to life’s opportunities."

The Performance category notes success of roadway pavement that is at least 35 years old without a structural failure, and with an average interval between resurfacing of no less than 13 years. The State Highway Administration received the award for northbound and southbound I-97 between Crownsville Road and Waterbury Road in Anne Arundel County, built in 1986.

The Design category is for more recently designed and constructed asphalt roads meeting certain pavement criteria. The agency captured this award for a more than 4-mile segment of westbound MD 404 (Queen Anne Highway) between west of Newtown Road and the Queen Anne’s County line in Talbot County, constructed in 2017.

Both awards acknowledge the agency’s commitment and high standards for design, quality in construction and value for the traveling public. Additional information is located here.

The Asphalt Pavement Alliance developed the Perpetual Pavement awards to recognize long-life asphalt pavements in the United States and honor new asphalt pavements demonstrating outstanding design and construction. The alliance is a coalition of the National Asphalt Pavement Association, the Asphalt Institute and the State Asphalt Pavement Associations, and has the mission to establish asphalt as the preferred choice for quality, performance and the environment.
