SHA to Re-open Second Lane along Westbound I-70 west of Ingleside Avenue Ramp; Temporary Traffic Barriers to Remain along I-70 between the Park and Ride Lot and I-695 Interchange to Discourage Illegal Street Racing

(September 15, 2009) – On or about Wednesday, September 16, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration’s (SHA) will modify temporary traffic patterns along westbound I-70 between the Park and Ride lot and the I-695 interchange in Baltimore County.

In July, SHA and MSP temporarily reduced a section of westbound I-70 from two or three lanes to one lane to discourage late-night Illegal Street racing along this section of I-70 in Baltimore County.  SHA evaluated traffic conditions after the traffic pattern change and will restore the second lane along westbound I-70 between the Ingleside Avenue ramp and the I-695 interchange to accommodate rush hour ramp traffic volumes.  The third lane along westbound I-70 close to I-695 will remain closed and the six-foot wide portable reflective traffic barriers installed by SHA in July will be shifted to accommodate the new traffic pattern.

Crews will modify existing pavement markings along this section of westbound I-70 on Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.  On or about Wednesday evening, motorists will travel along one lane of westbound I-70 between the Park and Ride lot and I-695.  West of the Ingleside Avenue ramp, motorists will be able travel along two lanes.  Motorists traveling from Ingleside Avenue to I-70 will be able to stay in the right lane to reach the I-695 interchange.

The traffic barriers and new pavement markings are intended to safely maintain traffic flow along westbound I-70.  SHA will continue to monitor traffic conditions along this section of I-70 and make adjustments as needed.
