Drivers Can Expect Nighttime Single-Lane Closures

(July 11, 2023) – The Maryland State Highway Administration will begin a project to improve about 1.5 miles of eastbound US 340 between Lander Road and US 15 (Catoctin Mountain Highway) in Jefferson on Sunday evening. The project also includes resurfacing the Lander Road ramp to US 340. The pavement improvement project should be complete by mid-August, weather permitting.

The project includes milling (removing the top layer of asphalt), paving, and restriping the main lanes and shoulders on eastbound US 340. Drivers should expect single-lane closures that will occur 7 p.m.-5 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays. During the ramp resurfacing part of the improvement project, drivers will be detoured using Mountville Road and US 15.

The State’s contractor, Francis O. Day, Inc. of Rockville, will use barrels, cones, and arrow boards to safely guide motorists through the work zone. Motorcyclists should use extra caution for uneven pavement during the resurfacing project. This section of eastbound US 340 was last resurfaced in 2009. The State Highway Administration understands that road work is an inconvenience but is necessary to maintain a world-class transportation system.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
