Pre-Construction Work Needed After Oversized Truck Damaged Bridge Last Fall
(May 7, 2025) – The State Highway Administration will close the
MD 28 (Dickerson Road) bridge over the Monocacy River, north of Doctor Belt Road, in Frederick County on Saturday to allow the project team to safely take measurements and perform pre-construction repair work. The bridge is safe for use but was damaged when a large truck struck the bridge in October 2024.
Starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, the State Highway Administration’s Frederick Shop will close the bridge to traffic and direct motorists to use a nearby detour route. The bridge is expected to open to traffic by 4 p.m. the same day, weather permitting.
The detour guides westbound MD 28 motorists to MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike) then MD 80 (Fingerboard Rd) to I-270 and then MD 109 to access MD 28. Eastbound drivers will use these same routes.

Structural repairs to the MD 28 bridge will require a future weekend closure and detours to be announced later this month.
The State Highway Administration works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving, and look for reduced speed limits as well as other traffic pattern changes.
