Motorists Can Expect Extended Work Hours with Daytime and Overnight Single-Lane Closures on I-83 Through Mid-Summer
(June 18, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is extending work hours on its project for the resurfacing project along northbound and southbound lanes of I-83 (Baltimore–Harrisburg Expressway) between Middletown Road and Downes Road in northern Baltimore County beginning today.
The extended work hours are necessary to accelerate the paving work as the previously milled sections of asphalt pavement are stressed due to extended exposure to the elements following a recent series of rainstorms.
At any time that weather allows for paving work, motorists can expect temporary daytime and overnight single-lane closures in both directions I-83 in the project limits. The paving operations will also take place on weekends. Drivers are urged to use MD 45 (York Road) as an alternate route. The entire project should be complete by early July, weather permitting.
The I-83 paving work is part of a $7 million State Highway Administration contract to improve pavement on Interstate highways within Baltimore County. The State Highway Administration’s contractor, Gray and Son, Inc. of Timonium, will also use temporary traffic signs and cones to guide motorists through the work zone.
Motorcyclists are urged to be aware of uneven pavement surfaces during the pavement resurfacing work. The State Highway Administration works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving, and look for reduced speed limits as well as other traffic pattern changes.
