New Bridge and Safety Improvements to Begin in Clear Spring
(September 4, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is beginning a bridge replacement project on the
I-70 (Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway) bridge over St. Paul Road near Clear Spring in Washington County. The bridge was originally constructed in 1965.
The $19.8 million project consists of:
- removal of the existing three-span steel beam bridge,
- construction of a new single-span steel girder bridge along both the westbound and eastbound roadways on I-70 over St. Paul Road,
- widening and resurfacing of portions of I-70,
- placement of new traffic barriers throughout the project limits,
- construction of stormwater management measures and drainage structures for the overall project improvements,
- replacement of Intelligent Transportation Systems cameras and
- installation of signage and pavement markings.
Work will be performed by Triton Construction Inc. of St. Albans, W.Va. There will be temporary intermittent single-lane closures while the barrier wall is put into place to shift traffic on I-70. Weather permitting, the project will be complete by spring 2027.
The project supports the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Serious about Safety initiative, an agency-wide effort that focuses on advocacy, education, project development and implementation to enhance safety for all roadway users.
The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience we work to improve Maryland’s transportation system. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused and be aware of changing driving patterns. Slow down or move over in work zones. It’s the law.
Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
