(October 15, 2025) - The State Highway Administration reopened the travel lanes of northbound MD 27 (Ridge Rd) in Mount Airy, Carroll County this evening following emergency repairs. All lanes of the eastbound I-70 bridge over MD 27 (Ridge Rd) remain closed and are expected to reopen tonight.
Both roadways were closed after an oversized tractor trailer hauling construction equipment on northbound MD 27 hit the eastbound I-70 bridge late Tuesday night damaging multiple beams. SHA began repairs shortly after the crash and have been onsite today to restore the bridge to safe travel conditions.
Two bridge beams located under the acceleration lane on the eastbound I-70 bridge sustained major damage and require more extensive repairs. As a result, SHA is closing the southbound MD 27 ramp and acceleration lane on eastbound I-70 for an extended period. Crews are currently installing concrete barrier on eastbound I-70 to separate the travel lanes from the closure and impacted area. SHA is currently working on a schedule and will announce details once finalized.
The State Highway Administration works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving, and look for reduced speed limits as well as other traffic pattern changes.
