(November 6, 2025) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has begun work to improve safety on two state highways in Harford County.

Contractor crews will upgrade sections of guardrails where needed on MD 136 (Calvary Road) from MD 543 (Creswell Road) to MD 22 (Churchville Road) north of Creswell, and on US 1 Business (Baltimore Pike) from US 1 Bypass to Tollgate Road north of Benson. The work is expected to complete by late December, weather permitting.

Crews began work on Monday along MD 136. Motorists can expect daytime single-lane closures with flagging operations within the project limits between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., weekdays.

Crews will begin work as soon as 9 a.m. Monday, November 10, along US 1 Business. Motorists can expect daytime single-lane and double-lane closures with lane shifts if needed within the project limits between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., weekdays.

The work on MD 136 and US 1 Business, valued at approximately $303,000, is part of a $6.5 million contract to upgrade traffic barriers along state highways in Harford and Baltimore counties. L.S. Lee, Inc of York, PA is the State Highway Administration’s contractor. Weather permitting, the work on MD 136 and US 1 Business will be complete by late December.

The State Highway Administration is Serious About Safety and asks drivers to slow down and move over, if possible, in work zones and pay extra attention to pedestrians and bicyclists. Keeping drivers, their passengers and vulnerable highway users safe is our top priority.
