Expect Temporary Nighttime Closures, Detours Between January 14-16

(January 8, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will close and detour the ramp from eastbound I-70 to US 40 (National Pike/exit 9) in Indian Springs, Washington County January 14-16.

The nighttime work is necessary to perform preliminary geological work for a future bridge replacement project (eastbound and westbound I-70 over Licking Creek). All work should be completed by 4 a.m., Friday, January 16, weather permitting. Drivers can expect the closures and detours nightly from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Drivers will be directed to continue to eastbound I-70 to MD 56 (Big Pool Road/exit 12) and back to eastbound US 40. Motorists should add extra driving time during work.

Motorists should plan extra travel time.  The Maryland State Highway crews will be drilling test holes. Crews will use signage, construction barrels and cones to assist motorists in navigating through the detour and the work zone.

The State Highway Administration is Serious About Safety. Pedestrians and motorists are urged to remain alert and avoid distractions when traveling through the work zone. Motorists should obey all posted speed limits. Motorists can dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
