Project Requires a Bridge Closure from Saturday Morning to Sunday Evening; Motorists are Encouraged to Use Alternate Routes

(January 14, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will temporarily close the MD 28 (Dickerson Road) bridge over the Monocacy River, south of Park Mills Road, in Frederick County on Saturday, January 17, so crews can replace sections of overhead steel. The work is related to a crash that occurred in October 2024 when a large truck hit and damaged the bridge. The bridge will reopen by 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, weather permitting.

Starting at 6 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, the State Highway Administration’s Frederick Shop will close the bridge to traffic and direct motorists to use a nearby detour route. The detour guides westbound MD 28 motorists to MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike) then MD 80 (Fingerboard Rd) to I-270 and then MD 109 to access MD 28. Eastbound drivers will use the same detour route.

No vehicles, including emergency vehicles, will be permitted to use the bridge during the closure due to an onsite crane. Local emergency services were notified in advance.

The State Highway Administration works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving, and look for reduced speed limits as well as other traffic pattern changes.
