Motorists Can Expect from Friday, October 16 at 9 p.m. through Sunday, October 18 at 9 p.m. for a Pipe Installation
(October 13, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will install a pipe across all lanes of westbound I-70 near Bower Avenue in Washington County, requiring a 48-hour closure and detour beginning Friday, October 16 at 9 p.m. and continuing through Sunday, October 18 at 9 p.m., weather permitting. The work will take place at mile marker 27, near Bower Avenue and the I-81 interchange.
Motorists traveling westbound on I-70 will be detoured at Exit 28 (MD 632/Downsville Pike). To access I-70 west and I-81 north and south, motorists will turn left from the exit and be guided onto MD 632 by a flagging operation.
Motorists will continue on MD 632 to the four-way stop at MD 632 and MD 68 (Lappens Road), then turn right onto MD 68. From there, motorists will continue toward I-81 past the intersection of MD 68 and Governor Lane Blvd./Spielman Road.
Motorists seeking to access westbound I-70 will continue on northbound I-81 to Exit 4B and the ramp to westbound I-70.
Crews from Triton Construction, Inc. of St. Albans, West Virginia will perform the drainpipe work. Advanced warning signs and flagging operations will guide motorists through the work zone.
